12-hour shift meal prep checklist
Twelve hours is a long time to run on vending-machine snacks. A little batch prep on a day off means each shift day is just grab and go.
Plan each shift in four parts
| When | Day shift (7am to 7pm) | Night shift (7pm to 7am) |
|---|---|---|
| Before | Quick breakfast at home or packed | A proper meal in the afternoon |
| Main break | Lunch: something filling that's fine cold or reheats in 2 minutes | Night meal around the middle of the shift |
| Snacks | Two snacks for mid-morning and mid-afternoon | Two snacks for the slow hours |
| After | Dinner at home (have it planned) | Something light before bed, if you're hungry |
Batch prep list for a 3-shift stretch
Packing tips
- Use an insulated bag and an ice pack. Many break rooms have a busy fridge, or none on nights.
- Pack food that's fine if your break gets pushed an hour.
- Keep a backup in your locker: a bar, instant oats, a tin of soup.
- Bring a bigger water bottle than you think, and refill it at every break.
Grocery list starter
Protein for the batch (chicken, beans, mince, tofu), a grain, frozen vegetables, fruit that travels (apples, bananas, clementines), snack packs, yogurt, eggs, bread or wraps.
